Investigate Tree Families

Objective: Students will investigate and discuss the similarities between members of the same tree families.

Supplies:

Procedure:

  1. Pick a tree family (ex. Fagacea, Pinacea, Juglandacea, etc.).
  2. Find all of the tree cards in that family.
  3. Look at the data on the tree cards.
  4. What growth traits are the most similar.
  5. How are the leaves similar.
  6. What are the strengths and weaknesses of the family.
  7. How does the family compare with other tree families.
  8. Think of habitats and environmental conditions in which the family would compete well with other families.
  9. Which species within the family are the strongest and weakest.
