Visit a Nature Trail
Objective: Students will encounter real tree species and learn to associate the cards with their real life counterparts.
Supplies:
- 1 set of Mighty Trees tree cards.
- Trail with labeled trees or Tree Expert (try contacting agricultural extension office or local college campuses)
Procedure:
- Organize trip to a location with labeled trees.
- Find trees with labels
- Find the corresponding tree card
- Read all of the information on the card
- Look at the tree and the area in which the tree is growing (is it near water, is it exposed to wind, is it taller than other trees, is it growing in the shade of old trees). Does the growth behavior of the tree seem consistent with the facts on the card?
- Try and identify similarities between the artwork and the actual tree
- Move on to the next tree
Make a Nature Trail
- Identify some trees on campus or along a trail with the aid of a tree expert
- Laminate the corresponding tree cards and attach stringers to the laminated cards
- Hang the laminated tree cards on the actual trees
- Invite others to enjoy your new trail
