Rules

Seedling Stage

How do we decide who goes first?
In Mighty Trees, you must decide who places two of the first three Wilderness habitats and who goes first. We typically play rock, paper, scissors. The winner chooses whether they want to go first or place the two habitats. Of course you and your opponent can use an alternate method (i.e. flip a coin, lady's first, visitor chooses, age before beauty, etc.). When playing against a novice player, consider letting them go first and place two habitats to help even the odds.

Do my unused Sols from one turn carry over to the next turn?
NO - You begin each turn with 6 Sols. Any Sols that you do not use are lost.

When I defeat an opposing tree in Tree Combat, do I place it in my Litter Pile?
NO - You never place your opponent's cards in your litter pile. When you defeat your opponent's tree it is immediately discarded to their litter pile. In the Timber and Elder stages, Weather, Mutation and Critter cards are always discarded to the owning player's litter pile as well. You may consider placing a small mark on the picture side of your weather cards to ensure that they are discarded to your litter pile (since weather cards are placed in the center of a habitat you and your opponent may forget who owns the weather card).

Timber Stage

Can the Water or Temperature Value of a habitat be raised above nine (9) or lowered below one (1)?
NO - One (1) is the minimum and nine (9) is the maximum for both Water and Temperature Values. For example if a player places the Saturated Soils trend card in the Southern Swamp Habitat the Water Value is increased from 8 to 9. If a player then unleashes the Flood disaster in the Swamp the Water Value is not increased to 10. The Flood does linger preventing trees from growing or being planted.

Elder Stage

Can I use a temporary mutation to boost my tree's Growth Strength if I have already spent 3 Sols in the habitat?
NO & YES
NO - If you are attacking an opposing tree during your turn, and you have already spent 3 Sols planting the tree in the habitat, you can not boost your tree's growth strength with temporary mutations. This violates the Sol Law #2, You can spend a maximum of 3 Sols within each habitat during your turn.
YES - If you are defending during your opponent's turn, you may use as many temporary mutations as you have Sols remaining regardless of how many Sols you spent in the habitat during your turn.

Once I have attached a mutation card permanently to a tree, can I use the card to temporarily boost my tree's growth strength during a tree combat?
NO - Once a mutation card has been attached to a tree as a permanent mutation, the temporary growth strength bonus can not be used.

Once a tree combat has been initiated, can I play a Broad Leaves or Hyper Cambium mutation card as a permanent mutation to boost my tree's Shade or Sun strength by +2?
NO - Once a tree combat has begun, mutation cards can only be played as temporary mutations. However, you can attach a permanent mutation to a tree prior to initiating the combat (provided you do not exceed the 3 Sols per habitat per turn).

Can I use the Tamias striatus (Eastern Chipmunk) and Odocoileus virginanus (Whitetail Deer) critters during my opponent's turn to gain 1 Sol?
Yes - Critters may use their abilities during your opponent's turn, unless the ability specifically states otherwise.

Tree Combat (Card #SE1-84)
Question #1 - If I use the Tree Combat card to initiate combat do I add 1 to my tree's Sun or Shade Growth Strength? You add 1 to the appropriate Growth Strength. If combat is in the Sun, add 1 to your Sun Growth Strength. If combat in the shade, add 1 to your Shade Growth Strength.

Question #2 - Can I use the Tree Combat card if there are only 2 trees in the Understory of a habitat? YES

Mutation

Deep Taproot (Card #SE1-73)
Does the "-4" in the Water Value symbol permanently reduce the lower, upper or both values in a tree's Water Range?
Lower Value reduced by 4 - The "-4" only effects the lower value of a Tree's Water Range. This allows a tree to grow in drier habitats than it normally would tolerate. Permanent Mutations only effect Trees in a beneficial way.

Extra Thick Bark (Card #SE1-80)
Does the "-4" in the Temperature Value symbol permanently reduce the lower, upper or both values in a tree's Temperature Range?
Lower Value reduced by 4 - The "-4" only effects the lower value of a Tree's Temperature Range. This allows a tree to grow in colder habitats than it normally would tolerate. Permanent Mutations only effect Trees in a beneficial way.

Smart Stoma (Card #SE1-78)
What effect does the "+2" in the Temperature Value symbol have on a tree?
Lower Value reduced by 2 & Upper Value increased by 2 - The "+2" effects both the upper lower value of a Tree's Temperature Range. This allows a tree to grow in both colder and warmer habitats than it normally would tolerate. Permanent Mutations only effect Trees in a beneficial way.
